Laker Volleyball
Hello Parents and Volleyball Players, May 28, 2010
Summer is quickly approaching and schedules are quickly filling with activities and plans for relaxation. Summer is also the time most fall sports programs continue to prepare for the upcoming season. I would like to inform you of the LOHS Volleyball program’s upcoming schedule and details that includes camp, tryouts, and season start.
This year’s coaching staff includes Head Coach Christy Burnett, Assistant Coach Stephanie Lavigne, Junior Varsity Coach Katherine Emerson, and Junior Varsity Coach Jamie Levine. We are excited about the amount of talent in the program and for the amount incoming freshman already playing volleyball. As we seek to build the program from the base up, it is important to ensure players are informed about playing opportunities.
Players are encouraged to get their hands on a volleyball as much as possible this summer as well as to come into the fall in volleyball fitness shape. There are numerous camps and clinics locally and within the state that provide players with repetitions in an all-skills or position specific settings. If you have questions regarding these opportunities feel free to contact Coach Burnett. The LOHS Volleyball program will host age specific camps the week of August 16-19 at Lake Oswego High School. These will be all-skills camps that will focus on passing, setting, serving, blocking, and attacking skills. Camps further provide players an opportunity to become familiar with the expectations and techniques taught within the program. Registration for camps can be completed through Community Schools at http://www.losdcommunityschool.org/
Tryouts for all grades this year will be held Monday, August 23 through Wednesday, August 25 from 9:00 am to 11:30am at Lake Oswego High School. Practices will begin Thursday, August 26 and will continue through the first day of school. As part of a commitment to a team all players selected are expected to attend all team events preseason to postseason.
Tryout criteria is based on:
- overall volleyball fitness level that includes jumping ability, explosiveness, agility, and strength.
- Demonstration of volleyball IQ that includes fundamentals and tactical skill work on the court. (i.e. reading the block, defensive movement, utilizing visuals, etc.)
- Effort, positive attitude, ability to play in a team setting, metal toughness
- Skill level and capability in passing, setting serving, attacking, and blocking
Our highly competitive volleyball schedule starts the first week of school so it is absolutely critical that players enter the season in shape not only for injury prevention as daily practices will be physically and mentally challenging, but to place us in a position for success during the season. Please take advantage of the open gyms held on various evenings the summer. For dates and times as well as announcements please view our website at
